East Palo Alto Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for First Degree Murder

Alleged Gang-Related House Fire Kills Elderly Woman

Authorities have arrested and sentenced Fifita Tau, 28, to 40 years to life in prison for first-degree murder in the death of Susana Tonga. Tau, an East Palo Alto resident, is accused of setting fire to a San Mateo home in a gang dispute, resulting in the death of the 86-year-old victim.

Fatal Fire in East Palo Alto

On March 19, 2023, at approximately 4:26 am, a fire was reported at a home on South Humboldt Street in East Palo Alto. Tau allegedly set the fire while targeting members of the West Side Tonga gang.

The fire spread rapidly, claiming the life of Susana Tonga, who was sleeping inside the home. Tonga's death has sent shockwaves through the community and has brought attention to the dangers of gang-related violence.

Gang Dispute and Arrest

Investigators believe that Tau's motive for setting the fire was related to an ongoing gang dispute. Authorities allege that he intended to harm members of the West Side Tonga gang, but the fire tragically resulted in the death of an innocent bystander.

Tau was arrested shortly after the fire and has been charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, but a jury found him guilty following a trial.

Justice for the Victim

Susana Tonga's family and friends have expressed relief and gratitude for the justice that has been served in this case. They hope that Tau's sentence will send a strong message against gang violence and protect innocent lives in the community.
